Red Kite is the bird of prey which I see far more frequently than any other these days. A pair nests near my home, and both birds often perch in a large ash tree which overlooks my garden. We have even tempted them down into our small garden on a couple of occasions, using carrion kindly provided by Huckleberry the cat.
The days of pilgrimages to Central Wales to see the few remaining Kites in Britain are scarcely believable now, such has been the success of the reintroduction scheme. The birds in my garden spread from the release site in the Chilterns, and soon we can expect to see Kites virtually anywhere in the country.
This bird was catching some early sunshine in the big ash tree behind our garden. They are very vocal and often approach quite closlely, but they are still wary of approach, so my efforts at photographing them have been limited to shots from the house.
